Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week, 15 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My subject is “Do you think Valentines Day is a “Made Up” holiday?” It was submitted by   Here goes:

Well, let me think about this.  If you really love me you’ll do at LEAST one of the following…  How else can you show your love to me? This is your one big chance, so choose wisely.

  • buy me a diamond necklace or ring
  • buy me a box of chocolates or candies
  • buy me flowers that will eventually die
  • buy puppy or kitten
  • take me out to an expensive restaurant
  • give me an expensive gift card to my favorite clothing store

Am I forgetting anything?

It doesn’t matter if you do any of the following things throughout the year… The only thing that matters is how you treat me on the Valentine’s Day. I need to brag and show off what a great man I have.

  • tell me you love me every day
  • bring my car for an oil change
  • buy me bumper stickers that support my hatred of Monsanto
  • pick up food when we run low
  • warm up my car on cold mornings
  • give me kisses
  • make me lunch when I’m home sick
  • call to say hello
  • wash and put away dishes
  • clean up the mess I was too tired to put away
  • tell me I’m beautiful
  • watch the movie I want
  • go out to the store at night because I’m too tired

I KNOW I’m forgetting something.

Okay…obviously I’m being sarcastic. Yes, I do believe Valentine’s Day is a made up holiday. It’s just pure silliness. Why is it so important  to have a date on Valentine’s Day? Why is it important to go out and prove to the world that your significant took you out on Valentine’s Day.

I understand it’s about the romance, but I prefer romance every day. I prefer my husband to be kind, caring, loving, thoughtful every day instead of just one day a year. I don’t need jewelry, flowers, or clothes to know my husband loves me. I don’t need an animal or nasty chocolate (that is filled with GMOs) to know he loves me. I just need him to show it to me everyday.  So when Valentines’ Day arrives and he hands me a card, I will happily return the favor and be glad he is still my husband. He hasn’t strayed or left in all my craziness.

Now that is love and commitment.

  1. I tend to do Valentine’s Day for the kids more than anything. My husband is not big on grand gestures, but I know he loves me and I am fine with that. He makes me fried mushrooms for no reasons and picks up my favorite chocolates just because. I don’t need a special holiday for it and neither does he.

  2. Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday. It has been since I was young. I love love. I’m not a huge fan of how commercialized it has become, but that can be said about most holidays. I definitely show my love and appreciation all year long, but do enjoy a special day dedicated to love. I love so many people I’m blessed to have in my life.
Excellent post! I’ve often heard it said that Valentine’s Day was created by greeting card companies. It seems possible, for sure.

  3. The year is full of special Holidays, Pi Day, Pie Day, Popsicle Day, so why not a day to make an effort for those who otherwise wouldn’t 😉

So the girlfriends and wifes of those who usually don’t make that big of an effort, and on V-day they use the excuse of “hypocritical made-up money pit”, well those ladies just have to treat themselves for whatever makes them happy. PS: I bought a charm for my necklace ♥

  4. Although I completely agree with you that expressions of love that we show each other in our everyday lives are the ones that matter, I also admit that I do love the fun involved in celebrating Valentine’s Day!

  5. I sort of love the day where it’s a little required to show me and for me to show him some love but completely agree that it’s just a day. And that the other 364 days of the year we both need to show love and act mindfully and with respect towards each other! I like how you presented this post!!! We don’t go out on Valentine’s Day – we go snowboarding without the kids…this year since it’s on a Saturday we’ll probably bring the kids! There’s a big heart built into the snow on the bunny hill that you can ride up and then “jump” off on your board or skis! LOVE … flying through the air .. and hopefully not landing on your bum!

  6. Haha! I agree that the way we celebrate Valentine’s Day these days is pretty lame. I think the most romantic thing the Husband could do for me would be to clean the house…and I’m not going to be picky and say that should happen on any one day of the year.
