Book Review: What Came First

10557747

First comes love, then comes marriage, then . . . things can get a little complicated. Vanessa wants just one thing for her twenty-ninth birthday: an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, Eric. But when the ring turns out to be a mix CD and Eric turns out to be a guy who doesn’t want to get married or have children, Vanessa considers a new path to having a family.

When Wendy and her husband, Darren, couldn’t have children the old- fashioned way, a sperm donor seemed like the perfect solution. She never imagined she’d have out-of-control twins who’d drive her to cookie binges and scrapbooking while Darren escaped into the virtual world of computer games.

Single and career-driven, Laura didn’t need a man to have a baby – at least not one that she ever met. Thanks to an anonymous donor, she shares her life with her adored eight-year-old son, Ian. She’ll do anything for Ian – even fill their backyard with a bunch of noisy chickens. But the one thing Ian really wants is something Laura’s never been able to give him: a sibling.

Now, to grant Ian’s wish, Laura starts a search that will not only change her life but Vanessa’s and Wendy’s as well…

COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN

From the moment I started reading, I could not put it down. I was drawn in by each character and their situation. While it was all predictable, in a way, it was a wonderful story and journey.

Sometimes we think we want something and other times it’s hard to face the truth, even if it’s hitting us in the face.
Life goes on and sometimes it changes.
Highlight for spoilers (((Vanessa knew Eric didn’t want to marry her, but she was too afraid to move on. She was too comfortable with the current situation. If a guy doesn’t want to marry you and have kids with you, nothing you do will change that.
Laura was trying to think of her son and get him a sibling, but to what end? She was doing all she could, but finally came to her senses when Eric kept letting her down. When he finally realized what he wanted, thankfully it wasn’t too late. They are starting out as friends, but I like to think the relationship will evolve and they will finally give Ian that sibling he wanted.
Wendy knew her marriage was over, but she couldn’t face the fact. Darren didn’t really want a wife, but loved his kids. The separation is forcing him to realize how good life was and he should live life and not spend it on the computer. Wendy also realized her son is not bad or crazy, just and emotional person, much like herself.)))
