Blogging and I Can’t Sleep

Finish the Sentence Friday

And now for this week’s sentence to finish:  I blog because…
And next week’s sentence to finish: ”…………..”

I needed to know I wasn’t alone.

When I first started blogging MANY years ago it was dedicated to my dog, Balboa. He was a puppy back then and it was from his point of view. There were many doggy mom and dad blogs and we all supported each other. Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Google Plus were NOT part of blogging. After my son was born, I started blogging about being a mom. That lasted for a few months, but it was all too much for me. I liked it, but didn’t really have a niche, didn’t know who I was.

When I was laid off my from teaching job a few years ago, I was scared, frustrated, and alone. I needed to vent and possibly look for work. I thought if I started blogging, I could make money, write books, sell products. Soon I just liked blogging, even after I got hired back, got laid off again, and then was hired by a similar company.

Now I find peace in knowing that…
some moms of only children also share my concerns
some moms of boys are scared by their wild little men, but also cherish their sons spirits and joy that the bond between a boy and his mom is like no other. some moms have toys all over and sometimes clutter and it’s okay
some moms cry, whine, drink wine, eat chocolate, or hide in the bathroom to make it through tough moments, we are only human
some moms have been through horrific moments, events, and periods and they made it through
some moms have been though infertility and are blessed with a miracle, while others are still praying to God for theirs
some moms work outside the home, some work at home, and others stay at home, in the end we ALL love and cherish our kids
some moms have partners that don’t help out at home and some do
some moms rock at cooking/backing, others rock at photography, others rock at art and crafts, others rock at singing…and we ALL rock at being moms

I could go on forever, but the point is I LOVE not being alone. I love knowing that whatever I write, I will be supported and understood. I know I will support, empathize, and understand other moms. I know we are all working hard to raise our kids in a scary world and want the best for them.

1. Do you wake before the alarm or stay in bed until the last possible second? I am usually up about fifteen minutes before my alarm goes off, then I can’t go back to sleep, it’s just impossible for me. I lay in bed and try to relax. When I do get up, I get UP AND GO, I have no choice. I have to get ready for work and get Dino all set for his morning.

2. Who should get a baby shower? Is it just the first baby or all babies? In my opinion, just the first baby…but I would never tell anyone they couldn’t have a shower or criticize them for it. If our fate was different and we had a second child, I wouldn’t have a shower. I am sure we’d be sent gifts and clothes, but I’d use what we already have on hand. By the second baby, I would know what I needed and didn’t need and wouldn’t want too much clutter or junk.

I think instead of second showers, moms should get fresh cooked meals delivered to their house and monthly packages of diapers and wipes. That makes a great gift for a second baby, heck even a first baby.

3. How will you spend Memorial Day? Relaxing at home and trying to keep son busy. Maybe, walk around town, catch the parade, have a picnic if the weather is nice.

4. Do you have a Storm/Hurricane/Tornado/Fire plan for your kids, house..? Yes and NO. I have some things in a bag for an emergency. I need to restock and organize it. We have an OLD basement in the apartment we rent and it is NOT safe to stay down there. In an emergency, we could run down there to avoid being blown away or crushed. I’d rather hang in our bathtub with a mattress over my head, but that’s just me.

5. What is your favorite morning drink? Hmmmm, I guess it would be coffee, with flavored creamer. Before that I NEED to drink water to really wake me up.

Vision Board and My Suprise

Finish the Sentence Friday

And now for this week’s sentence to finish:  ”When I was younger, I wanted to…”
And next week’s sentence to finish: ”I blog because…”

”When I was younger, I wanted to…” be a teacher and a mom. Seriously, that is what I wanted to do. I would pretend to teach to my “students” or toys. I would plan out my family. Yes…crazy I know, but really I was ahead of the times. Technically that could be my vision board.

I would draw pictures of what my family would look like. How many kids I would have, their names, their eye color, hair color, height. I should have kept going with my vision board, but in the end I got what I wanted. I’m an educator, though I was laid off for budget cuts then rehired at a similar program to teach. I’m a mom to a wonderful, amazing, intelligent, and loving little man. Sure it didn’t all work out as I had planned, but it did come true.
I’ve taught at a residential school (where the kids lived on campus) and for special education schools. I have been a self-contained teacher, reading teacher and literacy coach that pushes in to the classroom, reading specialist that works with students individually, and a reading teacher that works with small groups. I’ve been teaching for over ten years and love what I do and can’t imagine not being a teacher. Besides, I met my wonderful friend teaching. Even though we do not work together anymore, she is an important person in my life.

1. Do you have a doppelgänger? When I was about seventeen I was helping out in a university administration office.  I had to open applications and file them in appropriate drawers. Well, when I opened one file, it was me! I was as if someone had taken my high school class photo and put it their application. She had my black curly hair, my style of cut, my nose, my eyes, my face. It was the freakiest thing I had ever seen and I always wondered if I would ever run into her.

2. Do you keep your car cleaned up? NO…I am terrible with that ask my parents or hubby. BUT NOW with the FlyLady I do. Every Friday, I clean my car which is even dirtier. Between traveling from one to school to another, I sometimes eat in my car and the mess builds. I have tons of audio tapes, bags, books, and test everywhere.

3. What is a current fashion that drives you crazy. Girls wearing clothes are are too tight, short, or low. As a teacher I always made sure I was covered up and wearing appropriate clothes. Now, it seems that girls are expected to wear almost nothing. Cleavage and butt cheeks show with no shame at all. They have no clue about dressing respectfully or respectful. They have no clue that you can show your curves while being covered up.

4. How often do you go grocery shopping?  I used to shop every other week, but then I would always need more bread, eggs, almond and rice milk. Now I shop once a week according to sales. Some items are weekly necessities and others are purchased because of the sale. It makes it easier to save money, not waste food, or run out of food and make annoying unexpected shopping trips.

5. What has been the best surprise of your life? My son, sure we did IVF but there was no guarantee it would work. When I told I was indeed pregnant and then watch my son grow inside of me and eventually brought it home…Well what a true miracle and surprise from God.

get in shape. Don’t get me wrong, I am not going to diet or change the way I look because I hate my body. I truly believe we women need to love ourselves and show positive body acceptance for our children. How will they know to love themselves if we don’t show them?

I do however, want to get in shape. I want to be able to run and jump around with Dinosaur without feeling like I might collapse form a coronary. I want to take long walks up hills and not fall over and lie on the floor like a beached whale. While on vacation, I want to be able to do whatever Dinosaur wants and not hold him back because I can’t.

I want to eat healthier meals and try to limit the processed foods and hormone-filled meats that come into our home. I can’t buy organic, just too expensive, but I can cook a few vegetarian meals that will ROCK!

1. What’s the one personal hygiene thing you will not do in front of your spouse? OH BOY, Can I really share that on this blog, LOL. I think it would have to be anything related to when AF visits the house. I’m sure he’s seen things by accident in our eighteen years together, twelve of which we’ve been married. Though I would prefer him not to, but that is marriage, right? Now as a mom I try to keep the door closed.  My son is slowly starting to understand privacy, since I give it to him when he’s in the bathroom.

2. What’s your favorite thing about a newborn? Of all the things I missed about Dinosaur being a baby, the thing I miss the most is the unspoken connection I felt with him. We still have that connection, but as a newborn I had to rely on his facial expressions, coos, and movements to understand what he wanted. I loved looking in his eyes and seeing his love for me and recognizing my love for him.

3. When is “too young” to have a Facebook account? Oh wow, there are some adults that are even too immature to even have Facebook, LOL. I think I would freak out when Dinosaur has a Facebook page, but I hope not till high school. I mean, middle school is really young right? Dino is just about four, I can’t imagine the teenager he will be and what will happen. Oh man, I can’t even imagine him a teenager, LOL.

4. What are your hoping for for Mother’s Day? I gave hubby a list of links for crafts he can do with our son. That is what I want most for Mother’s Day gift, a handmade gift made by both my boys. A gift my son can see me proudly hang on our wall or use. Then I want some time to myself, after working all day and traveling from school to school, I really just want time to myself.

5. What was the best field trip you ever took in school? I honestly don’t remember my field trips. My years at Catholic school were a blur, I was bullied and have pretty much blocked it all out. I have been informed we did go to a ranch one weekend when we were in eighth grade and I happend to be taking our son to that same ranch. For me, it’s really like the first time going there, so I can’t wait.

a time machine. I am serious people. A time machine to get back to my life. I am telling you right now, I would not and could not handle it. I would go mad with worry and make myself sick. All I could think about is my son and never seeing him again…and I would NOT want him on the island. NO WAY…not even thinking about him on that island alone if something were to happen to me.
So I would hop into my time machine, go back to my life as if I was never on that island in the first place. Yup, that’s my answer. I don’t care how foolish it sounds.

1. What is your next home improvement goal? Since we rent, we don’t have a home improvement goal. Though I want to buy two hanging tiered metal baskets to use in the kitchen. I can use them to hold fruit on one side and my dishtowels and rags on the other. It will save counter and cabinet space in our tiny kitchen. I can’t take credit for this, it was my mother’s idea.

2. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be? No religious texts (ie Bible, Quran, Torah, etc, etc).. Wow tough question, only one book. It would have to be Bet Me by Jennifer Cruise. It was a difficult decision, but this book as a strong female character, positive body image, romance, great story line, and lemony goodness…what’s not to love? I was thinking out renting the audiobook again from the library, one of my favorites.

3. What is on top of your refrigerator? Since we have a tiny kitchen, I kind of relented and let my husband organize this space. It was a battle not worth fighting over AND the top of the old fridge gets so hot that nothing can really be stored on it anyway.

So we have

  • coffee
  • basket with hubby’s favorite food containers that Dinosaur can’t reach (hubby can be a little anal over certain things)
  • hubby’s little grills which make a big mess
  • my collection of cookie cutters which I hardly use
  • hubby’s water jug for only him I would NEVER use it…bleh
  • and in the cabinet is too many coffee travel mugs…which next time FlyLady says we are in the kitchen zone, I am attacking that cabinet.

4. What are your favorite or most used phone apps? Having my favorite man and all the apps I use on a daily basis right at my fingertips. Of course I would have my cozi calendar…I LOVE that app. I have all our appointments, birthdays, zones from FlyLady, and added my own FlyLady list of detailed cleaning. It’s color codes, so as a visual learner, this is important. I also use the Weather Channel app, but only once a day…so it’s on the next page.

5. What’s the one thing you hate most about your spouses job? Oh boy, the snow removal is the thing I hate the most. Since he is a custodian, he has to go in when it’s horrific out and remove all the snow from the school. I hate it, I know it has to be done but I often worry about his safety driving in that snow before even the plow truck has cleaned our driveway. Thankfully he was a Jeep and it’s good in the snow, but I still worry. Then after removing snow he goes back to his regular scheduled hours, which is the second thing I hate.

1. Who drives when your family is together, you or your spouse? Usually hubby drives…but I hate not having control and critique the way he drives. I know that’s not nice, but he drives me mad sometimes. He’s either too cautions or too reckless.

2. Are you an introvert or extrovert? I’m most definitely an introvert, except when I get to know you and feel comfortable with you. My friends would say that I am crazy and an extrovert, but that is only with them. I rather listen and watch and, but can’t hide my emotions with my facial expression. My true feelings always show. With students, it doesn’t count…you almost have to put on an act as a teacher and pull them into a lesson.

3. Are you married to an introvert or extrovert? Hubby is an extrovert. He will talk to anyone about anything. Often getting so involved in the conversation that he doesn’t see my signals to leave or their signals they want to stop talking. While I will be untrusting of people that I don’t know (there are CRAZY people in the world) hubby will talk to them for hours. Of course once you gain my trust, and that is hard, you can come over anytime you want.

4. What’s your favorite type of social media? I like my twitter with my alias, LOL. I can really say what I feel and am thinking, and instead of being judged others will agree with me whole heatedly.

5. What’s your favorite way to “recharge”?  Listening to a book on tape is a great way to unwind. Sitting on the couch, drinking coffee and reading blogs and writing ALL BY MYSELF is another good way. I also love to watch my missed TV shows.

I remember when Dino was just a year old, a bunch of co-workers and I were talking about not having time when you have a kid. I said I would give anything to have an hour to myself to watch TV. She told me she had a problem with that and I should do something else?!?!?!?!?! She also told me that drinking Gatorade while pregnant was not healthy, but she had a diet soda at least once a day. She also tried to tell me that my insurance would be charged first for procedures because my birthday was before hubby’s.

The fact that I didn’t have my own insurance and was under hubby’s didn’t seem to phase her and the nurse told me that because I was also so dehydrated no matter how much water I drank, drinking Gatorade is perfectly fine.

1. Where do you hide things from your kids at? In our bedroom closet or in the basement. So far he’s too little to go searching, but I’m sure soon he will.

2. What is your favorite rainy day activity for bored toddlers? My preschooler gets crazy trapped indoors. If it’s not raining too bad, I’ll let him run around in the rain and jump in mud puddles. Otherwise we’ll play hide and seek, paint in the bathtub, or build a fort.

3. Are you a punctual person or are you always running a few minutes (or more!) late?? For family events I tend to run late, but for work and appointments I’m early. That’s bad, right?

4. When eating out, do you prefer off the beaten path “Mom and Pop” cafes or tried and true national food chains? It depends on our mood. I LOVE our local Greek Diner, but now it is becoming ore commercialized. I love Olive Garden, but also love the smaller “mop and pop” cafes as long as the price is within our budget. Mostly the big chains have better prices and deals.

5. Does your significant other snore? Do YOU snore? My hubby snores so flipping loud, I can hear it with the doors closed and TV on. I mostly sleep on the couch, not only because of the snoring, but also because of our different work schedules.I miss sleeping in our bed, but I would get NO sleep and I’m already living on little sleep as it is.

I saw this on Facebook and had to pin it…IT’S SO TRUE.

1. Would you go to your high school reunion? NO, NEVER.. I would love to see the ladies I graduated with, but most of the teachers left a bad taste in my mouth. Especially that one troll of a teacher.

2. What’s something that you’ve recently splurged on; either for yourself or someone else? Oh boy. I have been very tight with my money, trying to spend wisely and save. I did splurge and buy hazlenut creamer. Is it sad that creamer was my splurge?

3. How do you handle your child’s fever? I hate when my Dino is sick. I give him a children’s pain reliever and fever reducer, vicks on his chest, lots of cuddles and keep him home from daycare.

4. What’s the nicest thing to happen to you lately? hmmm, Let’s see. Two different ladies complimented my son on his wonderful behavior in church. That alone made my week. I let him bring some toys and sit in the last row. He happily plays and I know he is listening.

5. What is your current favorite song? Oh boy, I don’t listen to much music as I am always listing to books on tape, so I don’t listen to music often.

1. How often should adults have birthday parties? As often as you want. Age is a celebration, an accomplishment, something to be proud of. If you want to celebrate every year, then go at it.

2. What was your room decorated like when you were a child? Um, wow, is it bad that I don’t remember. I had a VERY messy room, I was so unorganized and hated cleaning. Strange considering my post yesterday, right?

3. Do you have any traditions for Easter? If so, what? and do you have a why behind that? Never really had a tradition before son was born. Now we decorate eggs the Saturday before, go to church on Easter morning, and have an Easter egg hunt. Now that we live in a small apartment, we can’t even host holidays, so we usually do Easter with one family and the Friday or Saturday before with another family.

4. Do you get Good Friday off? If so, any plans? As a teacher, yes. Hubby has off too. We either spend it with family, but today is a family day. Maybe the diner, Kohl’s for sheets, and maybe some mini golf.

5. Did you wear hats & white shoes to church on Easter? (Or was that just in the South?) I don’t think I did as a child, I think it was just pastels. Dinosaur has a snazzy gray outfit that my mother got him, can’t wait to see him dressed up. I have a pastel and white shirt over leggings.

1. What is one thing you wish you did not have to teach your children? I wish I didn’t have to teach my son that there are evil and mean people in the world. I wish he is never bullied, used, or hurt by someone. I truly wish he only surrounds himself with good, kind, respectful friends and family.

2. What are you going to use since Google Reader is going away? I just exported my feed to The Old Reader. It’s going to take a while, if that doesn’t work I will have to see what others are doing.

3. British comedy; Hilarious or strange? Most of the time I think it is strange. I like British romance, but often find their comedies difficult to laugh at. My favorites are Love Actually and The Holiday.

4. Do you prefer card games or board games? I’m more of a board game person, except Monopoly. That game is just torturous

5. Will winter ever end? I truly thought the last snow storm was the LAST, but now there might be more snow tomorrow. I AM DONE WITH SNOW…ENOUGH. I need to take Dinosaur out and get him running around without jumping in cold snow or muddy yards.

1. Does your family coordinate clothing for church on holidays like Easter? No, I will donate, but we don’t coordinate any donations or events. Hubby does volunteer with his old boy scout troop. He has his Eagle and is basically the assistant scout master. He sets up and organizes plenty of events for both of us.

2. How do you get out of a funk? All I have to is text or talk to my girlfriends, usually the conversation gets raunchy, weird, freaky, or crazy and I am laughing so hard I can’t breathe.

3. Online friends – real friendships or not? I met some wonderful ladies through Twilight fandom and if I had not lost my job a second time due to budget cuts, I would have liked to meet up with one of the other ladies. We had hoped to get together to see Breaking Dawn 2. I did chat regularly with some wonderful moms just like me. I would like to attend a bloggy conference one day (when I have job security again) and put a face to all these wonderful blogs.

4. What is the one food you must eat in a restaurant (not make yourself)? Wow, that is a hard question, so many great things to eat out. The ones I can think of are, muscles marinara, scungilli, veal parmigiana…I would NEVER be able to make them at home.

5. What would happen in your home if you ran out of ketchup? We are out of ketchup right now and it is horrific. We can’t have eggs or hot dogs, it’s a travesty. I NEED lots of ketchup on my hash brown and sausage omelet. This is VERY BAD, thank God I am going shopping tomorrow morning. phew. It’s like running out of mayo and looking at the cold cuts and bread and crying. Okay, I am being over dramatic since I am exhausted and running on fumes.
