New Experiences and Challenges

Challenges

This past Sunday, for Mother’s Day I ran walked the Run Like A Mother 5k and AJ did the 1 mile for kids. What an experience it was, wish I had done that sooner. This was my first time attempting anything of the sort. At one point I almost cried. It wasn’t because I couldn’t do it, it was the overwhelming power of the moment. Just looking up and seeing all the kids in their blue shirts and all the women, moms, daughters, sisters, aunts, grandmas, and friends in their pink shirts. What a sight it was. I could feel it in the air and I am so proud to have been a part of it.

I walked the 5k in 55 mins! For me that is darn good. Next year my goal is to jog it in 45 minutes, if I do better than that is great. Even AJ is excited for next year. He said he will practice running so he can run with the big guys. I think he wants to challenge himself to run faster as well!

rlam collage

I recently learned how to effectively tie my sneakers when running walking. I never paid attention to this extra hole and really could have used this for my 5k. I tried it and it’s AMAZING, it really works. I didn’t have the irritation above my heel or on my pinky toe! Even the bottom of my heels didn’t hurt as much. Did you already know about this?

NEW BOOKS

What do you listen to when you exercise? Music used to be my motivation for long commutes and exercise, now it’s a good book. I don’t own an iPod, but with Audible I can listen to any book, anytime, and anywhere. All you need is the Audible app and an Amazon account. You simply download the book and listen till your heart’s content. Want to know what books I’m reading and read my reviews? Do you post about your book reviews? If you do you can link them up every Monday. Here’s my latest book review and linky.

Sign In to Audible        bookreviewbutton-2

I still borrow CD books from the library, we should all take advantage of that. Though they may be cutting back on CDs they can send from other libraries to your library. Did you know you could do that? If your branch doesn’t have the book you want, you can go onto bibliomation and have the book sent to your branch when it’s available. Not sure what to do, just ask a librarian. Neat, right? Well, I really hope they don’t cut back on that, but afraid they will.

Each new book brings on a new journey, a new adventure, a new family. I don’t want to leave this place,

I want to press a button and like magic additional chapters appear and the story continues.

It really is devastating when a book ends. No matter if the ending is what you wanted, feared, hated, or cherished…you don’t want it to end. Then you start a new book and the possibilities are endless, but you never forget your old friends.

HE’S GOING TO BE SIX??????

AJ is going to be six next month! Can you believe it? 6!!! Where did the time go? The fact that it took us 6 years to become parents and that is how old our little guy is! All those years of depression, worry, anger, jealousy, worry, fear are now replaced with love, hope, joys, craziness, passion and family.

Every milestone, every accomplishment, every worry, every frustration is truly a blessing I once thought I would never get to enjoy.

I think it’s time to start working on his party supplies and gift bags. I have to start taking his 6 year old picture make a collage of his previous b-day pics. Do you go to a professional or do it yourself? I have been using PicMonkey to edit pic and make collages and it’s a BIG money saver. The more you practice the better you get at it, besides it’s fun to create your own!

Run, Walk, or Perhaps Crawl

picjumbo.com_HNCK4578 (2)

So after watching the race for years, I’m joining the Run Like a Mother Race 5K in my town on Mother’s Day!

http://www.runlikeamother.com/

No, I will not be running, but I will be walking. I thought I would be crawling after a few minutes, but I surprised myself as I trained for the race. I walked 2.3 miles in just 47 minutes last weekend! Then today I walked 3 miles in 55 minutes!!!!! I did it!!!!

AJ will be joining me too! The kids get to run one mile before the moms run. How exciting is that! He gets his own shirt and a medal for competing.

What do all the contestants get for participating? We get a recyclable tote/grocery bag, a Jockey Performance Tech Tee, a race bib (with timing chip affixed) and some small goodies. Pretty awesome right? After the race we get a ribbon I believe. I’m going to pick up our shirts and goodies Friday afternoon.

I hope Hubby takes lots of pictures, I want to capture all the great moments. I got some great advice, don’t worry about the other racers, just focus on me. Don’t worry about competing with anyone, just compete with yourself! So I plan to do just that, I’ll continue listening to Tess Gerritsen’s new book on Audible.

Die Again: Rizzoli & Isles | [Tess Gerritsen]

At the finish line, which is the local park, they will have stands with activities. I really am looking forward to the being a part of it all. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Mother’s Day? I’m hoping to go to one of the local restaurants and get have brunch with my guys afterwards. Then we have to all walk back up a hill to get home, but after a 5K it shouldn’t be too bad, right?

How about you? How will you be celebrating this Mother’s Day?

Getting Stronger and Healthier for my Son

Untitled

I am now squatting 95 pounds! That’s right, 95 pounds.

I can wide squat 85 pounds.

And closed leg squat 65 pounds

I can do 30 burpees with ease!

Why lower weight with closed-leg squats???? I started that weighted squat later than the regular squat and you have to squat down pretty low…which really works your butt.

I haven’t measured insured in a while, but I’ll wait till the end of the summer for bigger/better results.

My personal trainer, who I love, said I am getting stronger, have more endurance, and of course cracks up with me while I work out.

Guess who thought she was squatting 50 lbs…but was really…

squatting 85 lbs?

ME!

I was adding wrong and was squatting more than I thought. I was so thrilled to know I was stronger than I thought.

I’ve started dead lifting 40 lbs…but plan on stepping that up. My personal trainer showed me how to add weights to the barbell and use a clip to keep them from slipping off.

The best part about getting stronger, is not only feeling better and looking better, but feeling powerful.

Last week I showed you how I squat with Dino on my back and walk around with him. Now I can walk around with him on my shoulders…I feel so powerful.

This weekend, I am going with my friend to buy new bras, since my old ones obviously are swimming on me. It’s going to be such a great feeling seeing more results of strength training.

Instead of the numbers on the scale, how do you know you are getting fit?

So frustrating…I’ve been sick and missed one training session. The next session I went, but wasn’t up to my full self. I haven’t been to the gym as much as I wanted.

Though I didn’t gain. Why? Continuing to eat healthy I kept my muscles and kept the inches off. I loaded up on healthy protein, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables. Eating good and REAL food makes all the difference.

This morning, I am going back to the gym and staying on my routine…no matter what.

At home I did what I could. I walked around with Dino on my back and did squats, lunges, and push ups with him on my back. I rolled him up in a blanket used him as my personal weight for dead lifts…whatever works, right?

I recently climbed up 70 flights of stairs using the stair master…pretty darn amazing, right????

My personal trainer kicked my butt, or rather I should say arms. She introduced me to ‘Twenty-ones’ and they are evil. Basically twenty-ones are 7 half reverse bicep curls, 7 half bicep curls, 7 full bicep curls…you repeat three times. The key is to use a smaller weight…because you are doing 21 curls…it’s a killer…I know my muscles are growing, but they hurt for two and half days…LOL

I decided that I want to do the triathlon next May. I CAN DO IT. I WILL DO IT.

I am so motivated to participate in the triathlon. A mother at the Little Gym where Dino had sports skills commented on how good I look and said she did the triathlon. She is a tiny woman and she did…she smiled at me and said “Strong is the new skinny.” I almost jumped on her with joy.

Then my friend’s sister participated in the triathlon for two years with her husband. She gave me some great tips and ideas. I am so motivated.

I told Tony and he said he and Dino would be waiting at the finish line for me…that right there just motivated me even more. I have a whole year to prepare.

  • 5th Thurs Dinner: Minnesota wild rice, chicken, and veggies
  • 6th Fri Dinner:  chicken sausage, jasmine rice, and veggies
  • 7th Saturday– leftovers
  • 8th Sunday – pasta, sauce, turkey meatballs
  • 9th Monday – coconut chicken, potatoes, carrots
  • 10th Tuesday sports skills – take out night
  • 11th Wednesday leftovers

5th Thurs Dinner Minnesota Wild Rice, chicken and Veggies From the Bulk Section at Whole Foods, I got Minnesota Wild Rice. adding lots of seasoning I followed the directions to cook. It is a chewy type of crunchy, and very yummy. Dino loved eating “WILD” rice and kept shaking his body saying it was making him WILD.

I seasoned the chicken and cut into smaller pieces. Then I added a half a bag of stir fry frozen veggies in with it and sprinkled on some shredded coconut. Yes, I’m in to coconut lately. It came out so darn good…Hubby didn’t like it, but Dino and I did.

6th Fri Dinner: Chicken sausage, jasmine rice, and veggies

chicken and apple sausage and sun dried tomato sausage cooked baked in a cast iron skillet with cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots. Then mixed with boiled jasmine rice. PERFECTION

7th Sat Dinner: Leftovers We had family over to celebrate Dino’s birthday. It was just a small gathering since we had the kid party last weekend. Since Daddy was working, we just had leftover chicken pork, rice, and veggies. Every Saturday, Dino takes karate. His teacher says he’s a natural, born to learn karate. In just a few weeks he got his second stripe. The teacher thinks next month Dino will be ready to test for his yellow belt.

8th Sun Dinner: Pasta, Sauce, turkeyballs it was a quiet day, stay at home day. Dino loved hanging out in the yard playing with his cars. He chose to eat peanut and butter sandwiches and a popsicle. I still made the pasta, sauce, and turkeyballs, but we’ll have them for Monday. I did make homemade popsicle with him. I bought silicone pop makers. We blended almond milk, bananas, and strawberries then poured them into the pop makers. After freezing them for a few hours, they were delicious.

9th Mon Dinner: coconut chicken, potatoes, carrots Since we had the pasta, sauce, and turkeyballs for dinner tonight, I still had to make the chicken. I sectioned it off and now have to sets of breaded coconut chicken. All I will have to do is make the grains and veggies.

spaghetti Collage

10th Tues Dinner: sports skills – take out: Today was the last day of the sports skills class at the Little Gym. I am going to sign him up for the gymnastics class over the summer. He will truly enjoy that. He was so proud of his accomplishments and loved showing me what he learned. He loves his medal and we always celebrate with pizza and gelato.

Dino loves pepperoni pizza (he eats tons of fruits and veggies that I don’t mind his love of this topping). I prefer the pesto pizza. The best part is, we order the personal sized pizzas, take half for dinner and half for lunch the next day.

little gym Collage

11th Wed Dinner: leftovers Tonight was coconut chicken, baked potatoes, and carrots. Hubby has down right refused to eat anything organic…saying it tastes yucky. Poor dude has no clue that the “flavor” he is eating is all chemicals created in a lab. All I can do is make sure Dino and I eat healthy and real food.

I marinate the chicken with olive oil, water, coconut shreds, and herbs/seasoning. I coat the chicken in panko and shredded coconut…it just adds a superb flavor. The best part is having it for leftovers with sliced avocado…hmmm..the flavor is awesome. .

I’m going to introduce nuts and granola to Dino. My stomach doesn’t always do great with nuts, but a small dose should be fine and I need more snack ideas for Dino.

What are your favorite healthy snacks?

Yes, buying organic/NON-GMO is expensive. Until there is a big change in food production and what consumers buy, healthy choices will always be more expensive. If you want to start small with organic…here are some great tips.

homemade hummus is pretty easy and healthy. I loved making it. Here’s some great hummus recipes I made our hummus with dried chickpeas, I soaked them overnight in TONS of water, cooked them the next day with lots of seasoning then added our ingredients. I added some pesto, cilantro, and dill. Wonder what I will try next time?

31st Sat Dinner leftovers This was the day of Dino’s birthday party, I was happy to whip up leftovers and eat whatever, but hubby kindly got burgers and chicken fingers form our favorite place. The cake was from Stop and Shop, sadly it was NOT GMO free… IT would have cost too much. The snacks and juice I got for the party were all NON-GMO though.

Leslie from Pampers, Play dates, and Parties asked that I show some healthy snacks I have for Dino… Thanks for the idea Leslie

While I want Dino to eat organic and NON-GMO, I know that we still need chocolate and sweets occasionally. If they are made from safe foods then I will buy them.

I always have fruit that Dino can get anytime he wants…bananas, raisins, apples, pears… I love to put peanut butter on anything…

Some of our favorite snacks are

Getting Stronger and Healthier for my Son

Untitled

Yesterday I wrote about how I am getting ready for beach season for a FTSF post. You can read that here.

I recently climbed up 50 flights of stairs using the stair master…pretty darn amazing, right????

I can lift Dino up with little effort…which he just loves for me to do over and over.

I rocked it on the treadmill, which I normally don’t like because there is no muscle gain, so I inclined it 80%…all because of my muscles. muscles = endurance and strength.

I signed up with a personal trainer for one 1x a week. She showed me how to correctly do dead lifts and power squats. I did better than I realized.

~~~NEW WARDROBE~~~
My friend Kit is amazing. We went shopping and she taught me what I should be wearing to show off my toned body. I swear she should do this for money. I tried to get her to start a website, but she insists she does it for love and fun. Seriously, she got me to wear black! I haven’t worn black in years and here I am with black capris, shirts, and sandals… She is that amazing.
Imagine having a person help you shop for work clothes, update a wardrobe, or dress for a night out or a wedding. Shew needs to get paid, she needs to network…How can I convince her to get started?
Ready for the Beach
Finish the Sentence Friday
“It’s almost bathing suit season, and to prepare, I’m…”
strength training and eating healthy
I SO LOVE THIS PROMPT!!!
As you know from my Saturday posts I am getting stronger and healthier and from my Thursday posts I am only eating HEALTHY FOODS, you can find all the posts HERE.
I began with Weight Watchers but soon realized a few things.
  • I could eat junk and still be within my point range
  • Most of the food recommend was low-fat, fat-free, and processed
  • I gained muscle, which in turn adds weight, but lost inches…but was not be succeeding in Weight Watchers
AFTER THOSE REVELATIONS…
I decided to dump the program, continue strength training, and only eat organic and NON-GMO foods. Sure it costs more money to eat organic and NON-GMO, sure it takes extra planning, but knowing we are eating real food is worth it.  I used to NEED to have crystal light in my water or a soda. I would NEVER drink plain water…ever.
NOW…
I only want water, or seltzer when we go out. I drink my tea without any sugar and honey. The taste of artificial sweeteners is sickening.
My exercise routine consists of a 20lb kettle bell at home along with push ups, squats, and lunges. I can do 15 push ups (on my knees) with Dino on my back, I can do 15 regular push ups (sans Dino). I can lift him up and squat 2 sets of 5.
At the gym, I usually climb the stair master, recently climbing 50 floors, that’s right 50 floors!!!!!  With a personal trainer I am learning how make my muscles even stronger, by doing dead lifts and squats.  I recently rocked on a treadmill (I normally don’t since there isn’t big muscle gain while walking), but I raised the incline to 80%…the reason I did so well??? My muscles gave me the endurance to keep going.
It’s so empowering being strong and healthy.
  • I went from a size 1x to a 16
  • I went from NOT being able to walk up the stairs at work, while carrying my heavy bag, without hyperventilating and needing to sit down. NOW…I can practically run up those stairs with the bags and keep going.
  • I can run around our driveway and yard with my son and he’s the one who needs to take a break first.
  • I no longer hate water, I actually LOVE the taste of it.
  • I find that fruits, vegetables, and real food fill me for longer and provide me with the energy I need.
  • I am beyond delirious with joy when I find another NON-GMO product that Dino loves.
  • I love cooking from scratching and making healthy meals and treats for my family. Before it was all about cheap and quick, now it’s all about health and real food.
old me2
sorry about the out of focus pictures, I took them on my own and they don’t seem to come out best like that. Despite the fuzziness, you can still see the difference in how I look.
