30th Fri Dinner homemade hummus, tortilla chips, cheese sticks, and fruit

homemade hummus is pretty easy and healthy. I loved making it. Here’s some great hummus recipes I made our hummus with dried chickpeas, I soaked them overnight in TONS of water, cooked them the next day with lots of seasoning then added our ingredients. I added some pesto, cilantro, and dill. Wonder what I will try next time?

31st Sat Dinner leftovers This was the day of Dino’s birthday party, I was happy to whip up leftovers and eat whatever, but hubby kindly got burgers and chicken fingers form our favorite place. The cake was from Stop and Shop, sadly it was NOT GMO free… IT would have cost too much. The snacks and juice I got for the party were all NON-GMO though.

Leslie from Pampers, Play dates, and Parties asked that I show some healthy snacks I have for Dino… Thanks for the idea Leslie

While I want Dino to eat organic and NON-GMO, I know that we still need chocolate and sweets occasionally. If they are made from safe foods then I will buy them.

I always have fruit that Dino can get anytime he wants…bananas, raisins, apples, pears… I love to put peanut butter on anything…

Some of our favorite snacks are

Yes, buying organic/NON-GMO is expensive. Until there is a big change in food production and what consumers buy, healthy choices will always be more expensive. If you want to start small with organic…here are some great tips.

Pay as you go

I was sad to give up my Motorola droid global phone because we didn’t have the money for the monthly bills. I was terrified that I would have to

get a cheap phone similar to the ones from the 1980’s. I know that’s superficial, but I take so many photos and upload them to picasa for my blog. Without that I would be lost.

I went to best buy and was overwhelmed with the choices and was about to buy a phone with simple picture quality. A wonderful sales person came over to me, asked what I wanted and listened to my worries and needs. He explained that the Virgin Mobile pay as you go LG Optimus Elite would be the same exact thing as my the Motorola Droid.

Well it’s not…IT’S BETTER!!!!!!

Yes, BETTER. I was shocked at how a pay as you go phone can be such an amazing smart phone. Sure I had to pay $129.00 for the phone, but it was worth it. It’s my phone, camera, and video recorder in one, so I am really saving money by not buying a separate camera. I get UNLIMITED texts and internet for only $35 a month. YES…$35 a month. I only get 300 minutes to talk, but I rarely talk. It doesn’t have a memory card, but I used the one from my old phone, so that was a money saver.

With Verizon, I was a customer for thirteen years, but they would not offer any better deals and raised prices. I was paying about $100  month, isn’t that crazy? I will have to pay a cancellation fee…but in the long run paying only $35 a month saves us tons of money for other bills and groceries. I will NEVER get a contract phone again. Wonder if I can talk through skype on my phone?

Now…why is this phone better? Well, the camera is easier to operate and takes better quality pics, I can delete one or numerous photos from my phone at the SAME TIME. I can also share NUMEROUS photos at the same time. Connecting to wireless and back to 3G is easier with my  is quicker and simple.

I am so hooked and wished I had listed to my hubby sooner.

I now added my cleaning schedule to my sidebar, I will cross out the items I have completed. When a new month starts, I will delete the “strike through” and start over. What do you think of my new layout?

New Products and Store Frustrations

I found this new product, well it’s new to me. I have always liked Skippy peanut butter, but can’t always bring it to daycare since they restrict peanut products. At home I can eat it every day for lunch; adding apples, bananas, mangoes and other fruits to the sandwich to mix it up and add nutritional value.

I’ve used a lot of jelly and preserves over the years, but after finding Mango Butter in Trader Joe’s I am hooked. It doesn’t clump, fall out, and get sticky like jelly, jam, or preserves. I will have to save up and get more.

Since my local health food store doesn’t carry any sunflower butter, I also use Trader Joe’s sunflower butter for daycare. It does get a little greasy, but keeping a paper towel underneath it helps.

I am disappointed in my local stop and shop store. They have just left a sour taste in my mouth. First their brand of freezer bags opened up too many times at the WORST times. Then they had expired almond milk products out for over a month. Yesterday they a had NO almond milk products at all. NONE. ZERO. ZIP. They are reorganizing the store and forgot to order more almond milk I guess.
It’s frustrating because they will double coupons up to 99c, but that is just not enough to keep my loyalty. Now I have to find a local store with good savings that accepts coupons. I do a good deal of shopping in Walgreens and Rite Aide because of their deals, coupon rules, and money back in the form of register rewards and up rewards respectively. But they don’t sell meat, almond milk, fresh fruit and veggies.
Trader Joe’s has lower prices than the supermarkets. Instead of buying frozen meatballs I’ll buy the ingredients and make my own. The brand of almond milk and rice milk was cheaper than the local supermarket. They have a pre-made  guacamole and hummus mix which is AWESOME! Dinosaur and I love hummus and guacamole, but I CAN NOT make hummus and suck at making guacamole.
And I just found http://healthylifedeals.com this site lists the deals and manufacturer coupons each week for Trader Joe’s. How cool is that!

Where do you shop for fresh foods? How many stores do you use for grocery shopping? Do you use/like Trader Joe’s?
