Organizing His Bedroom

Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

I’m using:

umbrella ~ puddles ~ washer ~ mop ~ mess ~ bath
They were submitted by: http://notthatsarahmichelle.blogspot.com

There is a tendency for Anthony to throw his toys all over his room. He likes to make a mess, as long as he cleans it up I don’t care. We had to move some furniture around, remove a play kitchen and taller dresser, and add two tall book shelves (only $10 each) at a garage sale.

Now he has more room to play, but doesn’t like to play in his room alone. He’s going through a phase right now and is scared of being alone. He likes to have one of us in there with him, as an umbrella of safety.

I told AJ if is table is clear, I would have no problem with letting him eat and drink in his room. As long as he doesn’t spill anything. I don’t want to have a piles of food and puddles of water all over. It would be a huge pain to clean and mop it all up. At least all his clothes can all be thrown in the washer and he can be given a bath.

Someone said I should prank him for April Fool’s Day by removing turning some furniture around, but I don’t believe in mean pranks on that day. Besides it would be hard work for me to do it, then fix it all.

Eventually I’d love to get him a bunk bed with an office and storage underneath. If we need an extra bed, we can buy a blow up mattress and only take it out when needed.

Since we took out the tall dresser, I put all his clothes in the the closet. His pajamas and underagarmetns are in teh dresser with sheets and pillow cases. All pants and sweatshirts are in the sweater organizer. Jackets, coats, hoodies, and all types of shirts are hanging in order in the closet. This way he can see everything and decide what he wants to wear

In his room he has a spot for…

  • all his cars
  • hanging basket for stuffed animals
  • bookshelves for books
  • bookshelf for art supplies
  • rolling cart for Legos, which can be moved around, see this post
  • basket for imagination toys

In his closet he has space for…

  • his Star Wars toys
  • all sorts of figures
  • dinosaurs
  • guns and swords
  • sparring gear for karate
  • overnight bag

His closet seems messy, but it’s organized. I could probably use a larger rolling cart for the closet to store his figures and dinosaurs. I’ll just  had that to list “when we have extra money”.

I’m using:

tendency ~ maneuvre ~ rainbow ~ legitimate reason ~ apple slices ~ prank
They were submitted by: http://thethreegerbers.blogspot.ch/

I’m going to stick to talking about our small apartment, making it work, and updating and organizing our place in the Use Your Words Posts. This will make it a fun challenge.

We decided to stay in the small space, thought our lease is not up until the end of the summer. Yes, we have legitimate reasons to stay, you can read them all in the previous post, Do We Stay or Do We Go? Unless a decision is made for us, we are staying and making it work.

With a small space there is a tendency to just have everything at your reach, out all the time. When that happens, things get easily cluttered and messy. It’s a habit I have fell into time and time again, though hubby doesn’t help. While I love him dearly, he tends to want to keep everything, which is why we have too many things.

Yes, if we put everything away and everything has a spot you will have to maneuver things around to get the one thing we want. That is a small price to pay for a clean and spacious feel.

My parents, even though I protested, bought us new rugs, blinds, curtains, and a bathroom mirrored cabinet. While I can’t have a rainbow of dark colored walls and bright accents, the maroon curtains add the color that is much needed in our place. Even the one in the kitchen (which we tied to the blinds so they go us and down with the blinds) looks darn cool. The multi-colored rug blends with the couches and curtains and makes the place feel roomier.

Hubby often gets mad now because I won’t let him accumulate or hang things anywhere he wants. He says I’m being a witch and I just remind him that I worked damn hard to make this place clean and organized. He needs to show me he cares and respects me by following those rules. I know I am cruel and sort of pranking him when I take things he left out and leave them on the bed or dresser. I just refuse to see clutter in the neat kitchen.

I have a crazy routine in the morning, but when I am done I make sure I leave the kitchen clean and organized. I expect the same when I come home from working all day. I mean how would he like it if I left the apple slicer and discarded apple slices on the counter to for him to clean along with the dirty food processor, pots, and dishes?

Next few posts I’ll show you AJ’s updated room, how I am making my 333 wardrobe capsule work in my closet, and my morning routine and how I still leave a clean kitchen.

Now onto the organization. The clean and organized kitchen. yes, I need to decide how to use those hanging baskets or get rid of them. That is our whole kitchen, but everything has a place.

With the new rugs and dining table out of the way, the small apartment looks more spacious.  A long run from the kitchen to the living room makes the place look longer. The new rug is a low pile which makes both AJ’s and Bonus’ toys roll and fly on the rug with more speed.

Yes, we have to pull out the table each time we need to get into the basement, which holds all our office and household supplies. We moved AJ’s art organizer to the basement door to cover it’s non-appealing door and give color and joy while we eat.

I have no problem moving the table near the kitchen or in the middle of the living room if we need have lots of people over. Between the table and some hidden folding tables we could entertain lots of people.

3-8 living room7

There is even room for AJ to place his Lego board on the table. It’s a tight squeeze getting it through the door, but we can turn it sideways if all the pieces are securely on there.

Next to AJ you can see our tower of towels. We ditched our bulky wicker baskets that were falling apart. This open shelf stores all our towels and has a cleaner look. It works that it’s close to the table, since our washcloths do double duty as napkins. I rather keep washing them then buying and throwing out paper ones.

I’m using:  ice cubes ~ intercept ~  bribing ~ unbelievable ~ Andy Warhol

They were submitted by: http://thethreegerbers.blogspot.ch

Currently renting a small, 950 square foot apartment, space gets tight and personal decorating style is limited. There are times I miss our former condo with its high ceilings, dark brown walls, and brightly colored accents. In contrast our current apartment has bland white walls and we are limited to temporary furniture to organize. The one small closet in our bedroom is the toughest part, which is why I am thinking of getting a tall shoe organizer. This will enable us to have more space in our bedroom closet. Next to the shoe organizer I’ll place a tall drying rack that allows for clothes to be put on hangers. This will save floor space and I think look cleaner in a small bedroom. Finally I bought one set of hangers with hooks, I plan to buy another set when I get my first September paycheck. Using these hangers will give me more space in my closet and allow me to organizer clothes by sets.

That’s great for the organizing, but what about the decorating you ask. I know it’s unbelievable, but often my hubby will try to add a movie poster or sports plaque to our home. Can you imagine? Thankfully I’ve been able to keep them hidden in the bedroom and the garage his man cave. There has been bribing on his part to allow these posters, but I always win. If it was up to him, I’d probably have Godfather characters in an Andy Warhol type paintings all over the living room. Not that I have anything against his art, it’s just not my style.

I prefer casual and cozy, with lots of different colors and furniture. I like when pieces don’t match, but they look good all mixed together. Dark colors such as deep browns, oranges, blues, greens, and maroons are what I love to see all around me. For now that is what our accents will have to be. Those colors can be seen in our curtains, throws, pillows, wall clings, and AJ’s art. I think hubby prefers more a modern look, with bare minimum expect for all his movie and sports details…which is NOT happening. I have been able to intercept most of his crazy, awkward, or insane ideas.

Tough the one thing I can not stop is all the little things he does to aggravate me. You ladies know what I mean. The endless emptying of the ice cubes and and never refilling the tray, taking butter off the top instead of at the end so it looks like a boat, his eating unhealthy snacks in front of our son before dinner, or his plan to ignore any mess, dirt, or grime since he knows I will eventually clean it up.

I know I have my habits that annoy him too, but that’s for another post.

Do you Allows Toys in the Living Room?

Renting a small apartment means limited space and no playroom. In our home we have a living room, spot for a dining table and chairs, kitchen with hardly any counter space, and two bedrooms. That’s it…no playroom, den, or office. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my small apartment. It keeps me from overloading it with unnecessary items and we have a garage, driveway, lawn, and we’re close to the center of town. clean living room collage

Now with a small apartment, my office is a spot on the couch…which is NOT comfortable, but it works. I prefer the other couch, but I have the roll-out electric fireplace that I use as a make shift table. office couch

AJ has a nice sized room, but never plays in there. I can hear AJ in his room and see into part of it from the kitchen. He even has a TV and DVD player. Despite all that he tries to drag all his toys into the living room.

his room collage

I put my foot down while cleaning and organizing this summer. I made it very clear that no toys are to be brought in the living room, it’s only for watching TV and movies. I set up a play space for him on the side of the couch near his bedroom door…that was working…for a bit.

messy living room collage

Well as you can suspect it only lasted two days…soon toys were everywhere in the living room, cushions were down and made into forts, and it was a mess once again. Hubby is frustrated as wants to enjoy the living area as do I, but at the same time I understand our son doesn’t want to be cast off in his room. At this point, I have given up fighting him on the toys and mess, though I have limited the amount he brings in the space.

basement door

If we didn’t have that basement door between the bedrooms, we could set up a play area there. That would make a perfect spot for AJ to play while keeping our living room clutter free…but we need to have access to that door at all times.

Where do you let your kids play with their toys?

In the Master Bedroom with FlyLady

master bedroom collage2Last week I wrote about Dino’s room and bathroom organization and cleaning, you can read that here. Hubby did an amazing job last week…he helped so much and made me a happy wife. Who doesn’t love a happy wife? a few chores last week. This week was a bit weird, we did work on Monday, since we were both off, but with the storms and hubby’s hours all messed up Tuesday and Wednesday were a bit messed up. I am sure he’ll get back into the routine today and Friday.

master bedroom collage checked offPicMonkey CollageEven with a small bedroom, I needed a laundry area…and it works now. Under the drying rack I have a basket for delicate clothes, bag for towels and sheets, and all my crochet storage. Eventually I’ll get a nice basket for crocheting supplies.

our bedroomNow Hubby has made the bedroom more of his “man area” which is fine. I don’t get too worried as long as it’s clean…well mostly clean…our bedroom3 our bedroom2Any tips on how to give the bedroom a nicer touch…even if it’s a manly look.

What did you clean/organize this week? How do you split chores in your house?

ORGANIZATION…

CollageIf you follow FLYLADY, then you know this week is the main bathroom and one other bedroom…for me that means our only bathroom and Dinosaur’s room.

We have a TINY bathroom, which we have gotten used to…even though when we are sick I do wish it was bigger. Though it does help to have a boy who can pee pretty much anywhere if need be, LOL

Behind the door storage…this was my mother’s idea. In this storage I have all the personal hygiene a woman needs, my makeup and hair accessories.behind doorOne of our towel racks is great for a hand towel and a the disposable hand towels…great for a dinosaur.. behind door 2Under the sink is my most favorite part…a basket filled with rolled up hand towels and washcloths. I also have extra bathroom wipes and my hairdryer. The basket is sitting on a wire rack which raises it off the ground…in case there is a flood and great for storing extra wrapped and unused toilet brushes for my swish and swipe routine.

under sinkDino modeling in front of our sink…it’s small but works for us…and we try to keep it uncluttered…but it’s so hard…any CHEAP suggestions?.

sinkAbove our toilet I have Windex which is part of the swish and swipe routine, bathroom wipes, lotion, Tony’s aloe gel which keeps finding it’s way back there, and a candle that has lost it’s sent but looks cute.

above toilet

Another one of my mother’s ideas was a shelf. That holds the swiffer wipes which I I keep forgetting to use, cleaning wipes, and pretty towels.

shelfInstead of the shower curtain liner with the pockets…which never got clean but was a great space saver, I now use corner storage. These great baskets with suction make the perfect place for toys and bath products…and they are easy to lift and clean.

ORGANIZATION…

I’m BACK and things are better.

So on to the topic at hand…What organizational product can you not live without?

The baskets in my car that my mother bought for me…they work great to keep things organized and looking clean.

ORGANIZATION…

NOPE…Not this week. I know I was supposed to talk about organization products that you can’t live without, but I need your help this week.

I am overwhelmed, tired, and need to get better organized. I drive to a few different schools during the week and wind up eating in my car more often than not. I My car is a mess by the end of the day…I need a better way to organize my teaching resources, student work, snacks, books on tape, crocheting.

I often crochet, snack, and listen to books on tape if I arrive to a school early and need to wait a bit. I need these things within my reach, but hate all the clutter and mess.

So I need some suggestions on what to do? How do you keep your car clean? What tools, tricks, techniques do you use.

ORGANIZATION…

 PicMonkey Collage

I have tried to keep Dino’s toys and closet organized. I have kept his clothes organized with pictures and words on the face of the drawers.

As for the toys, well that’s another story. They always end up everywhere, which I am fine with. That is what happens when you have a kid. It’s going to be messy and that is fine. Even though I try to make him play with one thing at a time he loves to mix and match toys and let his imagination take over. That’s what being a kid is all about.

clean table
Can you guess how many things he was trying to play with at the same time?

I have purchased pullout drawers and used them for small toy and puzzle piece storage in his closet. It was working for a bit…but little pieces, odds and ends, are everywhere and then he loses toys and parts and flips out.

How do you organize their toys? Do you have labels and special spots for everything? Do you have large bins where they can just dump toys? Do you special bags/drawers for smaller pieces?

ORGANIZATION…

PicMonkey CollageWhen I first started blogging I had my own cleaning schedule with daily, monthly, and weekly chores…It was detailed and crazy.

Then after much back and forth thinking, I decided to give FlyLady a try. I know it can be overwhelming at first with dressing to shoes and a shiny sink. There are morning and afternoon chores including and each week we focus on a different area. Before you can even clean, you must declutter and organize. It’s a lot at first, but when all done life is so much easier.

Am I a perfect flybaby? NOPE

Do I do the morning and afternoon chores all the time? NOPE

Do I have a super organized house that is always clean and tidy? NOPE

Do I have a mom that always finds something that dirty or unorganized? YUP

Do I swish and swipe the bathroom most mornings? YUP

Do I read every single flylady email? NOPE (I set them up to go directly to a folder in gmail and only look at them when I choose)

Do I perfectly cleaned floor with no crumbs and stains? NOPE

Do I have furniture and fans with NO dust? NOPE

Do I have a perfectly vacuumed rugs? NOPE

Do I have a super  clean bathroom? NOPE

Do I have a perfect living room, with clean couches, and a floor without toys? NOPE

I am far from perfect, but I know I can return to my schedule if need be.

FlyLady has teamed up with Cozi Calendar to include her zones into the calendar. This is great. I love to print out the week so Hubby and I know what is going on each week. We can see birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, parties, appointments, and activities.
