loving this book. No mother is or has to be perfect. When others tell you that, it’s their own insecurities coming through. This book shows what happens when a mom, who tries to be perfect, finally tells the truth. Can those who pass judgement do a better job?
How will it end? I am reading as fast as I can to find out.

Seeing them after all this time makes Georgia realize that something has been missing—and unless she finds a way to heal these rifts, she will forever be living vicariously through other people’s remnants. What Came First

siw

Goodreads Summary:

First comes love, then comes marriage, then . . . things can get a little complicated. Vanessa wants just one thing for her twenty-ninth birthday: an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, Eric. But when the ring turns out to be a mix CD and Eric turns out to be a guy who doesn’t want to get married or have children, Vanessa considers a new path to having a family.

When Wendy and her husband, Darren, couldn’t have children the old- fashioned way, a sperm donor seemed like the perfect solution. She never imagined she’d have out-of-control twins who’d drive her to cookie binges and scrapbooking while Darren escaped into the virtual world of computer games.

Single and career-driven, Laura didn’t need a man to have a baby – at least not one that she ever met. Thanks to an anonymous donor, she shares her life with her adored eight-year-old son, Ian. She’ll do anything for Ian – even fill their backyard with a bunch of noisy chickens. But the one thing Ian really wants is something Laura’s never been able to give him: a sibling.

Now, to grant Ian’s wish, Laura starts a search that will not only change her life but Vanessa’s and Wendy’s as well…

Sneak Peek:

Sneak Peak Saturday: Bitter Season

Sneak Peek Saturday on Reading List a glimpse into what I am reading currently

Current book:

The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag (Kovac and Liska #5)

siw

Goodreads Summary:

A murder from the past. A murder from the present. And a life that was never meant to be… As the dreary, bitter weather of late fall descends on Minneapolis, Detective Nikki Liska is restless. After moving to the cold case squad in order to spend more time with her sons, she misses the rush of pulling an all-nighter, the sense of urgency of hunting a murderer on the loose. Most of all she misses her old partner, Sam Kovac.

Sam is having an even harder time adjusting to Nikki’s absence, saddled with a green new partner younger than pieces of Sam’s wardrobe. Sam is distracted from his troubles by an especially brutal double homicide: a middle-aged husband and wife bludgeoned and hacked to death in their home with a ceremonial Japanese samurai sword. Nikki’s case, the unsolved murder of a family man, community leader, and decorated sex crimes detective for the Minneapolis PD, is less of a distraction: Twenty years later, there is little hope for finding the killer who got away.

On the other end of the spectrum, Minneapolis resident Evi Burke has a life she only dreamed of as a kid in and out of foster homes: a beautiful home, a family, people who love her, a fulfilling job. Little does she know that a danger from her past is stalking her perfect present. A danger powerful enough to pull in both Kovac and Liska and destroy the perfect life she was never meant to have.

Sneak Peek:

Chapter 10

page 95

Nikki blew out a breath and sad down. “He called he widow of my victim and led her to believe I’m not all that dedicated to this case, putting me in the adversarial position with her before I could introduce myself.”

Initial Thoughts

I love the Kovac and Liska series and each books gets sicker and more twisted. It’s obvious there are lots of secrets and lies in both the families: cold case and new case. I can’t wait for this wild and sick ride.

Sneak Peak Saturday: The 9th Girl

Welcome to Sneak Peek Saturday on Reading List!

Sneak Peek Saturday on Reading List a glimpse into what I am reading currently

Current book:

The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag (Kovac and Liska #4)

siw

Goodreads Summary:

On a frigid New Year’s Eve in Minneapolis a young woman’s brutalized body falls from the trunk of a car into the path of oncoming traffic. Questions as to whether she was alive or dead when she hit the icy pavement result in her macabre nickname, Zombie Doe. Unidentified and unidentifiable, she is the ninth nameless female victim of the year, and homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are charged with the task of not only finding out who Zombie Doe is, but who in her life hated her enough to destroy her. Was it personal, or could it just have been a crime of opportunity? Their greatest fear is that not only is she their ninth Jane Doe of the year, but that she may be the ninth victim of a vicious transient serial killer they have come to call Doc Holiday.

Crisscrossing America’s heartland, Doc Holiday chooses his victims at random, snatching them in one city and leaving them in another, always on a holiday. If Zombie Doe is one of his, he has brought his gruesome game to a new and more terrifying level. But as Kovac and Liska begin to uncover the truth, they will find that the monsters in their ninth girl’s life may have lived closer to home. And even as another young woman disappears, they have to ask the question: which is the greater evil–the devil you know or the devil you don’t?

Sneak Peek:

Chapter 7

13:30-13:50

Kovak considered the argument an sighed I’m not against it, the downside would be the glaring spotlight that kind of publicity would bring to the investigation itself. The had a victim with no face and no name, they had their work cut out for them.

Initial Thoughts

I am really enjoying the Kovac and Liska series, even though it’s about messed up and sickening crimes. This book is another tough read. It’s insane what evil people are capable of. There are so many twisting connections and convolutions in this story, I have no clue who the killer might me.

Sometimes better not to know. . .

And no one’s innocence is guaranteed, not even her own. By the time Cynthia discovers her killer’s shocking identity, it will again be too late . . . even for goodbye.

Sneak Peek:

Chapter 27: 1:47-2:05

“Honest to God Cyn, I don’t know what to think anymore, but the moment I saw that letter I knew it had come from my typewriter and I knew I hadn’t written it. That left you, unless someone came in here and wrote it on that typewriter to, I don’t know, make it look like one of us had done it.”

Initial Thoughts

Linwood Barclay really messes you up and makes you never trust anyone again. I can only imagine what twisted reveals and lies we will be in store for with this book. Totally know where this is going and hope it’s not obvious.

Sneak Peak Saturday: Secrets of a Charmed Life

Sneak Peek Saturday on Reading List a glimpse into what I am reading currently

siw

Secrets of a Charmed Life  by Susan Meissner

Goodreads Summary:

Current day, Oxford, England. Young American scholar Kendra Van Zant, eager to pursue her vision of a perfect life, interviews Isabel McFarland just when the elderly woman is ready to give up secrets about the war that she has kept for decades…beginning with who she really is. What Kendra receives from Isabel is both a gift and a burden–one that will test her convictions and her heart.

1940s, England. As Hitler wages an unprecedented war against London’s civilian population, one million children are evacuated to foster homes in the rural countryside. But even as fifteen-year-old Emmy Downtree and her much younger sister Julia find refuge in a charming Cotswold cottage, Emmy’s burning ambition to return to the city and apprentice with a fashion designer pits her against Julia’s profound need for her sister’s presence. Acting at cross purposes just as the Luftwaffe rains down its terrible destruction, the sisters are cruelly separated, and their lives are transformed…

Sneak Peek:

Chapter 14

“Once she was settled with pen and stationery in hand, the difficulty became not finding the privacy to write the letter, but the words to put inside of them. Julia’s had to be worded simply and so that she would not panic, and that proved to be the stiffest challenge.”

Initial Thought

Immediately  captivating and pulls you in. You need to know who Isabel really is and why she wants to tell her story. Is she really Emmy or Julia? And what happened to them? Or their mother? In the beginning you find out the origin of the polka dotted umbrellas and you MUST know what the “secrets” are.

Found myself crying at certain parts, truly emotional book. Beautiful historical fiction.

Torn between wanting to slap the crap out of Emmy for being selfish and stupid or hug her for being so brave.
